Muay Thai: the Martial Art that We All Know and Love

It takes a special type of person to get in the ring. Determined, disciplined, hardworking are just a couple of qualities it takes to be a fighter. In this article I will go through what it means to train and/or fight in Muay Thai. I will be covering a range of things, from training camp right through to the fight! The ups and downs of training camp can be intense. One day you can be feeling on top of the world, hitting the pads feeling sharp and on point, other days you can be feeling sluggish, tired and frustrated. It is all part of the journey, all part of reaching your peak ability and preparing, both mentally and physically, to be able to challenge either life or an opponent. Most fighters will train pretty much daily with the aim to keep learning and pushing themselves to be the best they can be. When fight camp starts it is a whole different ball game. Training sessions intensify, nutrition begins to get reined in and scrutinized. Family and friends begin to see a different

Josh is currently ranked n.2 in the YOKKAO UK Ranking -70kg and has just come away from a loss against his first Thai opponent, Kung Kiatphontip, an ex-Rajadamern stadium champion. A challenge to say the least for a first Thai opponent. He never makes it easy for himself, always likes to push and challenge his abilities! Safe to say his next opponent, Reece, will probably be one of the biggest yet for him, so lets see what Josh had to say!! Dom: First and foremost what got you in to Muay Thai? Since I heard that Saenchai would be fighting in YOKKAO 14, I have been totally thrilled. Throw your mind back to May when YOKKAO Key person Stefania Picelli, Saenchai and Pakorn were travelling the UK visiting different gyms running seminars, generating mad buzz and being totally awesome. I loved following their journey around the UK. They were posting fun videos of them doing crazy things, all the while hosting professional seminars that looked like so much fun. My name is Dominic but my friends call me Dom. I am from a little city in England called York but spend all of my time now residing in the North East of England in a city called Newcastle. I have been involved with Muay Thai for just a little over a year now and it has quickly become a massive part of my life. When I walked in to the gym for the first time I was extremely apprehensive, as you would be if you were the top end of 90kg, had never done any kind of fitness before let alone doing any kind of combat sports! I was quickly welcomed into the gym family and even more quickly welcomed into the community. I was amazed at how accessible everything and everyone was. What really blew my mind was that you could train with some of the biggest
