Mae Mai Muay Thai Tricks

The science of Muay Thai (Thai boxing) known in the ancient time as pahuyuth (Multi-skilled) has divided major boxing tricks into two kinds, namely. 

1. Mae Mai (Master Tricks)
2. Luk Mai (Complimentary Tricks) 

Mae Mai Muay Thai are consisted of 15 movements as follows: 

1. Salab Fun Pla (Cross stitch)
This is used for fighting at the distance. When the opponent throws a powerful straight punch, one steps outside of the opponent’s reach. So the opponent’s punch will not connect with the target. 

2. Paksa Waeg Rang (Bird peeping through the nest) 
This is used for fighting at close quarters. When the opponent throws a straight left to the face, one counters by stepping a little to the left making 60

 

degrees within the swing of the opponent’s left punch. Bend the left and right arms to block the punch, clapping the hands together like a Wai, peeping through the gap between both arms. 

3. Java Sad Hok (Java throws spear) 
This is used for throwing elbow from the outside. When the opponent throws a straight left to the face, one sways the body to the right about 30 degrees, with the weight on the right leg. Bend the left arm, use the knee to strike at the ribs below the left armpit. 

4. Inao Taeng Kris (Inao stabs his kris) This is used for elbowing in the inside. When the opponent throws a straight left to the face, counter by stepping the left foot forward, making the angle of 60 degrees, the weight on the left foot, bend the right elbow in parallel to the floor, and strike the elbow at the opponent’s ribs. 

5. Yok Khao Pra Sumer (Lifting the Sumer Mountain) 
When the opponent throws a straight left and steps closer, counter by moving the right foot forwards, lower the body, bend the right knee with the left leg taut, the body inclining by 45 degrees, the weight on the right leg. Straighten up the right leg while throwing a hook or an uppercut to the opponent’s chin, while guarding one’s chin with the left arm. 

6. Ta Tel Kam Fak (Old man holding the melon) When the opponent throws a straight left, while stepping the left foot forwards, counter by moving the left foot forwards towards the right to escape the punch. Bend the left knee a little and throw a left uppercut to the chin. The right fist is also bent to protect against the opponent’s left punch. 

7. Mon Yan Lak (Mon supports the pillar)
Thrust a kick when the opponent throws a straight left and moves close. One should counter by swaying the body to the right about 45 degreed with the weight on the right foot, and the arms bent to guard the face. Look at the opponent, launch a thrusting kick to the chest or to the region of the abdomen below the navel so as to blast the opponent away. 

8. Pak Luk Toy (Impaling the stake)
When the opponent kicks the body, counter by using the elbow to block it and pressing the sharp end of the elbow on the shin of the opponent. If the elbow makes a right contact, it could crack the opponent’s shin. 

9. Chorake Fad Hang (Crocodile sweeps its tail)
When the opponent throws a straight left, counter by advancing the right foot as if doing a footwork to the right to avoid the opponent’s punch. Bend your arm either right or left to protect your face, then turn around using the right or left leg to strike an upwards kick to the region of the abdomen below the navel or to the neck. One must swing the leg so that the heel makes contact. 

10. Hak Nguang Iyara (Break the elephant’s tusks)
When the opponent throws a fight kick to the ribs, counter by moving close to the opponent, with the left leg straightened and the right knee bent. Hold the right foot of the opponent with the left hand, raise it high, then use the elbow to hit the opponent’s upper thigh or if you could raise the elbow as high as the opponent’s head, bang it on the head. 

11. Nakha Bid Hang (Serpent twists its tail)
When the opponent throws the right kick to the ribs, counter by swaying the body to the left with weight on the left leg. Use the left hand to grasp the heel of the opponent and the right hand to twist the tip of the foot outwards, then strike the knee against the shin or the upper thigh of the opponent. This strike has to be executed very quickly, or else one might be found to break the rules by twisting the opponent’s foot. 

12. Virun Hok Klab (Bird somersaults)
When the opponent throws a right kick, counter by preempting such move. One makes a thrusting kick at the opponent’s upper thigh or anywhere on the shin. If you want to hit the chin, make contact with the heel. And if you want to hit the upper thigh, make contact by pecking the big toe part at the target. This should be very painful. 

13. Dab Chawala (Extinguish the lamps)
When the opponent approaches with thee left foot forwards while throwing the left punch to the body, counter by using the right arm to guard one’s chin. Step towards the right to avoid the left punch, sway the body to the right, using the arm to brush away and press the opponent’s left arm. Quickly fire the left punch to the area between the nose and mouth or the eye socket, or lower the body to throw punch at the body around the heart or plexus. 

14. Khun Yak Jab Ling (The giant catches the monkey)
This trick is for the inside fighting. One will have to use elbow, knees, and punches in a very quick and continuous succession so that the opponent would not be allowed time to settle down. This tactic is called in Muay Thai “Mai Pan Lam”, and only used by the boxer who is so versatile with Muay Thai, capable of using all weapons in a sharp and sudden burst. 

15. Hak Kor Erawan (Break the elephant’s neck)
When the opponent throws a straight left, while his right arm still guards the chin, counter by moving the left foot quickly towards the opponent, thrusting the right arm forwards to brush the opponent’s left arm away, and jumping to take held of the opponent’s neck and press it down quickly and sharply. Throw the knee to the upper part of the chest, the stomach, or the face if the opponent’s face could be pushed down so low.
